Hip Replacements are Causing Problems for Thousands
Are you experiencing complications after undergoing a complete hip replacement?
Hip replacements, particularly for the elderly, can be truly transformative. However, in recent years problems have emerged in connection with some of the most popular and widely used hip implants. Some metal-on-metal (MOM) implants – particularly the DePuy ASR models – have been linked to muscle and bone damage and neurological issues.
Thousands of people have required medical checks over fears that they’re metal hip replacements may be toxic. An alert was issued which called for all patients with metal-on-metal (MOM) hip replacements to have urgent scans and blood tests.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says: “The majority of patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements currently have well- functioning hips. However, some patients will develop progressive soft tissue reactions to the wear debris associated with metal-on-metal articulations.”
Metal-on-metal implants were marketed as the next generation style of implant. It was a large head metal implant, which was designed to provide greater durability, reduce the risk of dislocation and above all last longer than the components which were already on the market. It was aimed at younger, active individuals and the marketing of the product implied that patients fitted with MOM implant would enjoy returning to a full and active lifestyle.
Some metal bearings wear abnormally and can cause metal debris to shed into the surrounding tissue and muscles. This can cause a soft tissue reaction with the surrounding tissue and muscles and in some cases can lead to the main hip muscles being destroyed. Individuals suffer with varying degrees of symptoms including pain in the groin and buttock, inflammation, and clicking of the joint.
