A cancer patient who contracted a flesh-eating infection after a routine operation and was left with just an inch and a half left of his penis has been awarded a six-figure sum from the NHS.

Southend University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Essex has admitted that a delay in diagnosing potentially deadly necrotising fasciitis left 63-year-old Andrew Lane with life-changing injuries.

Andrew Lane, contracted the potentially fatal necrotising fasciitis infection following surgery to remove his prostate gland in March 2013.

His bowel was punctured during the routine operation at Southend hospital but staff only noticed six days later.

Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust admitted there were “failures” in diagnosing the problem.

Mr Lane, from Thurrock, said: “They’ve admitted their mistake, but I’ve not had an apology and knowing that just a scan a few days earlier would have prevented all of this is very difficult to accept.”

Following the life-changing operation, Mr Lane can no longer have sex, is incontinent and has been treated for depression.

When is it Negligence?

Medical Negligence occurs if the level of care provided by a medical professional is substandard and has directly caused injury or an existing condition to get worse through a negligent act or omission. The negligence might be the result of errors in diagnosis, treatment, aftercare or health management.

Medical negligence claims are very different to other compensation and personal injury claims; in order to successfully claim for medical compensation you need to prove two things, firstly that the medical professional failed in their duty of care (fault), and secondly that this caused your situation (avoidable harm).

Medical Negligence can have long lasting and life changing effects, often rendering victims unable to work or care for themselves a compensation claim does more than just pay for pain and suffering, it also helps to pay for any necessary rehabilitation programs, ongoing treatment and any modifications to your home that you may need. In addition, a medical negligence compensation claim can help cover the costs of any support programs for children who have suffered as a result, allowing them the opportunity to live their lives to the full and providing the extra care they need.
